Choosing the right size is an essential aspect when buying an extra pair of shoes. However, know that the fit of each model also varies based on the shoe size chart.

The current numbering of shoe sizes was available between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. It is machining developed to produce large quantities of footwear of many sizes in a short time. a

The first industry that produced quality shoes of prefixed and identical sizes was the English Mansfield Shoe company in 1892. In the continental system, the measurement came in French points. Each point equals 6.6 millimeters, while in the Anglo-Saxon system, the English point is available, corresponding to 8.4 millimeters.

To find your way around the different units of measurement of shoes adopted by various foreign manufacturers, we present the size conversion tables (shoe size chart). So, you can easily find the size corresponding to your shoe size.

Which Shoe Size to choose from?

It is vital when trying on shoes in the store to read on the packaging the US or UK size, depending on the brand. How to know if it is the right size for our foot? On the packaging or the inside label of the shoe, we will find the corresponding European size. However, if you have difficulty finding this information, consult the conversion tables below.

We can measure the shoe in various ways:

  • European size: it is equivalent to 2/3 of one centimeter.
  • American and Canadian size: a non-proportional scale with the European one is available. Men’s sizes are one and a half smaller than women’s sizes.
  • English size: this measure uses the same scale as the previous ones. It comes with typical measurements between men and women, where the men’s size is half a size larger and coincides with the American men’s size.

Converting women’s shoe sizes to men under the US system is a breeze. Simply subtract two measurements from an American woman’s size to get the corresponding men’s size. Respectively, add two sizes to the men’s shoe size to get the women’s size.

For sneakers, the difference is usually 1.5 measurements. It gets more complicated when you want to convert. For example, it is challenging to convert European men’s shoe sizes into English or American women’s shoe sizes.

For this purpose, you will find below a conversion chart for women’s and men’s sizes. As always, it is not an exact science. The conversion from man to woman for the footwear of your favorite brand can work differently. Men’s shoes are a little wider than women’s shoes. So, if you are a woman, you can decide to go a little smaller than the men’s shoes.

The real bargain hunters have already realized that the children’s section can contain fantastic shoes. It is often going up to size 10, despite having been declared a children’s size. In the US, children’s shoe sizes are grouped in C for Child (Kids) and Y for Youth (Boys). You are more likely to find suitable shoe sizes in the boy section, as they go down to 8 inches.

But what is the number translated into children’s sizes? With the table below, you can convert men’s shoe sizes into boy sizes. It helps answer the questions such as what does women’s shoe size 7 correspond to in children’s shoe sizes.

If you are wearing women’s shoes, you can use this simple calculation to convert your number according to the system used in the USA. Please subtract two units from your US size and you will get the corresponding number for boys. For the conversion of men’s shoes, you will need to subtract approximately 0.5 sizes, meaning that a US size 7 of men’s shoes would be equivalent to a size 6.5 for boys.

Tips For Converting Your Women’s Shoe Size to a Men’s Shoe Size

You must know the approximate 1.5 size difference between Men’s and Women’s sizing to ensure that you buy Men’s shoes in the correct size. Men’s shoes come in a range of sizes from 5-10 and Women’s shoe come in a range of sizes from 7-11. The smallest men’s shoe size offered is 5.5 which can be found today as a standard women’s shoe size 7. In most styles, the smallest men’s shoe size offered is 5.5 and Unisex styles are offered in Men’s sizing. Women should size down 1.5 sizes when converting their women shoe size to a men shoe size to ensure a proper fit. If you wear a Women’s D width, you will also wear a Men’s D width.

Women’s Shoe Size Men’s Shoe Size
7 5.5
7.5 6
8 6.5
8.5 7
9 7.5
9.5 8
10 8.5
10.5 9
11 9.5

Women’s shoes are approximately 1.5 sizes bigger than Men’s shoes, so a women’s size 7 shoe is the equivalent to a men’s shoe size 5.5. In most styles, the smallest men’s size offered is a 5.5 and women should size up 1.5 sizes from their normal shoe size to get an equivalent fit. Unisex styles are in Men’s sizing and will run an average 1-2 sizes larger than Women’s Shoes of the same style because they are sized for Men’s widths as well as women’s widths.

If your shoe size is a Women’s size 6.0 or smaller, you can refer to the Kid’s Shoe Size Chart.

Buckle up, because there’s a lot to take in when it comes to converting your women’s shoe size for men. In most cases, the sizing difference is about 1.5 – meaning that if you wear a men’s size 8, you should probably wear a women’s 9.5. Of course, this varies between brands and styles.

How to Measure Shoe Size?

Measurement for shoes

For each foot, there are four different measurement moments:

  • Static condition: it is the size of the shoe with the foot at rest.
  • Shoe size under load: it is when the person is standing and therefore the size and shape of the foot change.
  • Functional measure: in dynamic conditions, it is the one that can be obtained when a person performs movements such as running, walking fast, or jumping.
  • Thermal measurement: it considers the changes produced by heat and humidity. It can sometimes cause the foot to swell up to 5% compared to its measurement in a static condition.

What is the best time to choose a pair of black work shoes with the certainty of not getting the wrong size? The answer is in the evening when the combination of functional measurement and thermal measurement can determine the right size. It is useful to try on the shoes with the same type of socks that you plan to wear with the extra pair.

When you try on the new shoe, bend the tip of the foot to make sure the upper folds in that same place. It will help you determine the flexibility of the shoes and their softness, especially with lace-up shoes. Place your foot on a flat surface and measure the length from the heel to the longest toe using a tape measure. You can also make a mark on a sheet of paper at the heel and one at the longest finger and measure the length between the two strokes with a ruler.

During the measurement, make sure you are in an upright position, and keep the entire sole of your foot flat on the ground. Remember to repeat the same procedure for the other foot because no one has feet of the same size, shape, or proportions and the length may be slightly different.

Toe and heel should stay inside the shoe without causing pain or discomfort. Normally, there should be about one centimeter between the tip of the foot in the longest part and the tip of the shoe. The same measure goes for the space between the heel and the buttress. Your finger should pass between the two with no effort. If it goes in too easily, the shoe is big. Otherwise, it is too small.

In many countries, to establish the correct number of the length of the foot, an instrument called Brannock is available. With this tool, it is possible to get three basic measurements. They are the length of the foot, the distance between the heel and the metatarsophalangeal joint, and the width at this articulation.

No one at home has this tool. So, you can proceed with an equally effective do-it-yourself method. Make a mark on a sheet of paper at the heel and one at the longest finger. You need to measure the length between the two toe-heel sections and add to the measured measurement:

  • From 3 to 6 mm if the longest toe is the big toe
  • From 2 to 4 mm if the longest finger is the second finger
  • From 3 to 6 mm if the longest toe is the third toe or the first two toes after the big toe is the same length.

In this way, you will determine your shoe size. So, you can easily choose your shoes both online and in stores without the risk of getting the wrong size.

Shoe Width Measurement Chart: Wide & Narrow Widths

Ankle Width: How To Measure Foot Width?

We can measure the shoe width at the widest point of the foot. But how best to measure? Whether you can simply measure your shoe width by yourself or need the help of a second person, depends on how flexible you are. The best way to measure foot width is while standing. Because when standing, your foot has the realistic load and thus width.

Place a tape measure around the widest part of the ball of the foot and read its circumference. Ideally, a second person takes over the measurement so that you remain stable. You have now determined your foot width in centimeters.

The shoe width depends on the shoe size. To find out the correct shoe width, you need to know your shoe size and measure your foot width. Then, you can easily find out your shoe size on the following table.

Types of Shoe Width

Here lies the crux. There is only one standardized system for determining the foot width, it is the Mondopoint system. Here the foot width-measured at the height of the ball of the foot given in millimeters. The Mondopoint system is available in the military for protective or work shoes.

It is more difficult with casual shoes. Here, the foot width is often marked with letters. There are different letter systems:

  • Shoe width G: normal width (normal feet)
  • Shoe width H: wider when the feet are wider.
  • Shoe width K: wide feet.

Another system is:

  • W or B for wide or wide, sometimes also K for comfort width
  • M for medium
  • S for narrow

The most common is the shoe width system. It ranges from E to M:

  • Shoe width E: narrow feet
  • Shoe width F: slim feet with the normal width. For shoe size 36, it is 21.6 cm. For size 38, it is 22.4 cm. And for size 41, it is 23.6 cm. Anyone who has shoe width F can wear most standard shoes. Shoe sizes in cm here.
  • Shoe width G: wide feet with the comfort width. For size 38, it is 22.9 cm. And for size 40, it is 23.7 cm. Most available shoes also fit with this shoe width.
  • Shoe width H: firm feet. With shoe size H, the feet already have 22.6 centimeters of space in a shoe size 36. With shoe size 44, it is 25.8 centimeters. Even with this shoe width, you can find suitable shoes in stores.
  • Shoe size J: oversized feet. It is more difficult to choose a shoe. With shoe size 37, you have a shoe width of 23.5 centimeters. With shoe size 40, you need a width of 24.7 centimeters.
  • Shoe width K: oversized feet. The shoe size 38 offers 24.4 centimeters.
  • Shoe size L: ideal for bandaged feet
  • Shoe size M: feet with extra oversize

Why is the Shoe Width Important?

On the one hand, the width of the shoe is important for the fit. It is relevant for sports or work shoes. The shoe width is crucial for our foot health. The perfect shoe supports the natural movement sequences and offers a lot of comforts, even when standing or walking for long periods.

Shoes that are too wide offer insufficient support and can lead to incorrect strain and consequent tension and pain. Also, shoes that are too tight can cause calluses and blisters and deform the feet in the long term. The hallux valgus is the best-known example of this. This is why the footwear industry make the swollen feet shoes so that it can support the soreness, swollen feet and health related issues.

Children’s feet are prone to deformation as they are still growing. Their bones, muscles, and ligaments are all too willing to adapt to the tight shoe. So, it is important to find the right shoe size, especially with children’s feet.

How is the Shoe Width Influenced?

Everyone has individual anatomy. As fingers are different lengths and eyes are different sizes, feet are different widths from person to person. However, the foot width can also be influenced by other factors. For example, high stress can cause the feet to swell during the day.

Pregnancy can also mean that more water overload and the pregnant woman suddenly needs more shoes. In the long term, misaligned feet can cause wider feet. And weight gain or loss can also have a significant impact on the width of the foot and the width of the shoe.

If a shoe is too narrow, we usually notice it quickly because eventually, our feet hurt. If a shoe is too wide at the ball of the foot or the height of the sole, you slide your foot forward in the shoe. It is not a good thing as the shoe does not give the foot any support and the toes are constantly bumping into it.

Slipping out of the show back when walking can be because the shoe is too wide at the heel. So, the buyer chooses a smaller shoe size to avoid slipping out. However, it is not a good idea. Because the shoe is now probably too small and does not serve its purpose. Here, it is better to switch to a different model. Shoe width is one reason you should not buy shoes online. Shoes should always be tried on and tested in a shoe store.

Shoe Insole Measurement Chart

Insoles can be a great help to the health and wellbeing of your feet. These items could achieve their optimal effect if you paid attention to the correct size when purchasing the insert. We will help you order the insoles for your shoes and provide you with a size chart for insoles as a guide.

The following standard size tables apply to various insoles on the Amazon platform such as gel insoles, felt insoles, leather insoles, sports insoles, cedar soles, soft foam insoles, cinnamon soles, leather insoles, and footbed insoles.

The Basics of Insoles

Before we approach the action comprising the spine, we want to inspect the insole. An insert serves to relieve the feet or to correct a misalignment. The most common misalignments include flat feet, bent feet, and splay feet. In this way, pain such as that in the back can be reduced and subsequent sequelae avoided.

A sufficiently thick insole ensures you do not feel every stone or bump when walking. It serves as a protective shield between your feet and the dangers that lurk on the way, such as a hot floor, broken glass, and sharp stones. The insole should be sufficiently thick, but also soft. It has a footbed and comfortable padding. Additional suspension can also further increase comfort.

Most insoles include premature joint wear (osteoarthritis) that can result from a misalignment or incorrect loading of a joint. The insole is a loose sole for the inside that adapts the footbed to the anatomical needs of the wearer. There are various insoles for shoes. Above all, orthopedic and sensorimotor insoles are most popular.

An orthopedic shoe insole offers an individually adapted footbed. It offers a cushioning, support, and protection function for the feet. The tailor-made soles are not available in an adapted form but are adapted to your feet by a trained orthopedic technician. What material is depending on the intended use?

People often use stable plastic inserts dimensionally for leg misalignments such as knock knees. Leather and cork inlays in different lengths are the method of choice for the feet. Besides, there are soft models made of upholstery or soft foam for diabetics. As the name suggests, orthopedic models influence bones, joints, and soft tissues such as ligaments and tendons.

Besides, there are sensorimotor insoles. We could also speak of active shoe insoles, as these special insoles have a targeted effect on your muscles. Thanks to their special construction, they stimulate the motor receptors of the foot and leg muscles in depth.

It causes targeted muscle stimuli that lead to tension and relaxation reactions of the target muscles. A special insole is available when a muscular imbalance causes complaints. It is a type of muscle training that can help eliminate the imbalance.

Types of Insole

Besides these two types of insoles, the market also offers other types of insoles that are tailored for a specific purpose. But they have one thing in common. They should ensure an optimal position of the joints, cushion movements, and reduce your back pain.

  • Sports insoles: Sports make different demands on our musculoskeletal system. Besides, sports shoes often have a fresh cut than most street shoes. Many athletes have individual sports insoles that support them optimally during training and prevent back pain. Sports insoles are optimal for the load of the respective sport and have good cushioning properties. This is why sport shoes like adidas ultraboost are so popular among the runners.
  • Special insoles for high heels: Wearing high shoes is an enormous burden on your feet and your back. Because of the permanent bunion, high heels put your body in a constrained position and thus confuse the anatomical statics. To reduce the pressure on the forefoot area, provide additional support and increase wearing comfort, there are special insoles for the shoes. It is healthier for your spine to wear flat shoes, even with an insole.
  • Shoe insole against foot sweat: Shoe insoles are not only effective for back pain and orthopedic misalignments. These soles have activated carbon material and offer good air circulation, providing a remedy for heavy sweating. They also absorb sweat and bad smells.

When are shoe insoles useful?

An insole is often useful if you are affected by persistent pain. Short-term problems are no reason to go straight to the medical supply store. If there is a pain in the lower extremities, the first way should be to see a doctor. Besides the visual inspection, an important diagnostic tool is gait analysis.

The Bottom Line

In everyday life, your feet need enough space in shoes because when you roll your feet, your toes push yourself a long way forward. If there is less than a thumb’s width between each toe, it can be painful. And shoes that are too small are a major cause of gaining foot damage.

Besides the perfect shoe length, the shoe width is also important for the fit of the shoes. The fit is important for pumps and high heels. If the shoes are seated, painful blisters and pressure points quickly develop.

Before you can determine your shoe size, you need to know exactly what shoe size you have. It only takes a few steps to determine this. All you need is a tape measure, pen, and a piece of paper. Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor and put a sheet of paper under your foot. Then trace the outer outline of your foot.

Now, measure the total length of the outline from the heel to the tip of the longest toe. With deviations between the two feet, the greater value counts. Finally, look up your measured value in the shoe size table between women and men. Hope that this article will be useful for you!
