There is nothing worse than feeling helpless and dependent. The worst part of aging is just that, the moment you realize you need help. Often it is also when your family looks at you with a look that says it all: “hey grandpa, we’d love to help you but we’re too far / busy / scared…”
So many people reach the point where simple challenges, like maintaining their balance, is the cause the drives them out of their safe, known, comfortable home and into an assisted living facility. Sure enough, there are places that look better than 5 star hotels and resorts. For many elderly people life truly is better in those places. But what of the ones who are not very old? what of the ones who are perfectly healthy, lucid and active but they just tend to fall every now and then? Or forget to turn off the light, or whether or not they bought milk this morning? Why should they be driven out of their homes?
So what is “Aging in Place” and why is it important?
Aging in Place is a term that refers to “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” (Definition of the CDC)
It is also an approach that is growing more and more common, with the rapid aging of the human race. With the increase in life expectancy and technology and medical advancements, more and more people reach older ages than ever before. The costs for both residents and families, as well as the state, for keeping someone in assisted living facilities or retirement communities are enormous and it is always better – in every aspect – to help the senior stay in his or her own home for as long as possible, making aging in place the better alternative.
The B-Shoe as an Aging in Place solution
One of the things we tried to do with the development of the B-Shoe, is to give elderly people another way to age in place. The B-Shoe will allow elderly people who tend to lose balance, to continue about their daily routine in their home and community while feeling safe, confident and maintaining their dignity. It will also give the families and friends peace of mind, knowing that grandpa or grandma can go on staying in their home, go shopping, walk the dog and even cook and bake without the fear and risk of falling with no one around to help. The B-Shoe will provide solution or aid for aging in place and this is why it is so important to us to continue development and bring it to all.
After all… there’s no place like home!
